A more affordable Way to Build Concrete Roofs and Floors: Combining SCIP Panels with Super Floor USA

How Concrete Struksures is exploring innovative construction methods to reduce labor costs while maintaining the strength, durability, and efficiency of concrete homes.

The challenge with traditional SCIP concrete roof systems

At Concrete Struksures, we believe the future of residential and commercial construction lies in stronger, more durable, and energy-efficient building systems.

Our primary construction method uses Structural Concrete Insulated Panels (SCIP), which combine an insulated foam core, steel reinforcement, and concrete applied to both sides.

SCIP panels offer significant advantages over conventional wood framing, including improved thermal performance, resistance to termites and rot, and the ability to engineer buildings for demanding wind and weather conditions.

However, one of the biggest challenges with SCIP construction is the labor involved in building concrete roofs and elevated floors.

Unlike vertical walls, SCIP roof and floor panels require crews to apply shotcrete overhead to the underside of the panels. This process is labor-intensive, requires extensive temporary bracing and support, and can increase construction costs.

Using the SCIP panels for roofs and floors makes for the most robust monolithic system, but at a cost. The advantage of a SCIP roof is Fully autonyms and consistent use of materials. No need for drywall on the ceiling side.

That's why we're exploring a more efficient solution.

Introducing Super Floor USA: An innovative concrete floor system

Super Floor USA has developed an innovative suspended concrete floor system designed to simplify construction and reduce installation labor.

The system combines three primary components:

  • Engineered galvanized steel joists that provide structural support.

  • Galvanized metal decking trays that remain in place as permanent formwork.

  • A reinforced concrete topping, typically 3.5 to 4 inches thick.

Rather than constructing extensive temporary formwork or spraying concrete overhead, crews assemble the steel joists and decking, install the required reinforcement, and pour concrete from above.

The manufacturer describes the system as designed for installation without conventional shoring, subject to project engineering and loading requirements.

Combining SCIP walls with concrete floors and roofs

6

What makes this approach particularly exciting for Concrete Struksures is the potential to combine SCIP wall construction with a steel-supported concrete floor and roof system.

Our SCIP walls already provide an insulated, steel-reinforced concrete building envelope.

By incorporating Super Floor USA for elevated floors and appropriately engineered roof assemblies, we can potentially eliminate much of the labor associated with overhead shotcrete application.

The connection between the systems is especially important.

With properly engineered reinforcement and connections, the floor or roof slab can be tied structurally into the SCIP wall system. The reinforcing mesh and additional steel reinforcement can be detailed to connect the concrete components, helping create an integrated structural assembly.

A monolithic or continuous structural connection must be designed and verified by the project's structural engineer; reinforcement overlap alone does not establish one.

Why this combination could significantly reduce construction costs

One of the greatest expenses in concrete construction is labor.

Traditional SCIP roof construction can involve substantial bracing, overhead shotcrete application, multiple passes, and additional finishing work.

With a steel joist and permanent metal deck system, much of this work can be simplified.

While steel joists and metal decking may cost more in materials than SCIP panels alone, the reduction in installation labor can produce meaningful overall savings.

Actual savings depend on the building design, span requirements, reinforcement, labor rates, and roof assembly.

Concrete roofs offer advantages beyond traditional construction

Concrete roof systems are gaining attention among homeowners and builders seeking greater durability and resilience.

When properly engineered and constructed, concrete roof assemblies can offer benefits such as improved resistance to wind uplift, reduced combustible structural materials, long service life, and additional protection during severe weather.

For homeowners building in hurricane-prone coastal regions, high-wind areas, or locations exposed to wildfire, concrete construction can be an attractive alternative to conventional wood framing.

A complete roof system still requires proper waterproofing, drainage, insulation, flashing, and engineering for local conditions.

A more efficient alternative to ICF and traditional construction

Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) have become increasingly popular among homeowners looking for concrete homes.

SCIP construction offers another option, using insulated structural panels with reinforced concrete applied to both sides.

At Concrete Struksures, our goal is to take the advantages of SCIP construction even further by integrating complementary technologies where they improve efficiency.

By combining SCIP walls with engineered concrete floor and roof systems, we can offer builders and homeowners additional flexibility in designing durable, energy-efficient concrete homes.

Building stronger homes without unnecessary labor costs

Our philosophy is simple: Use the best construction method for each part of the building.

SCIP panels are an excellent solution for insulated concrete walls. But that doesn't mean every floor and roof must use the same construction method.

By exploring innovative systems like Super Floor USA, Concrete Struksures aims to reduce unnecessary labor, improve construction efficiency, and make concrete homes more accessible to homeowners and builders.

Whether you're designing a luxury custom home, coastal residence, commercial building, or storm-resistant home, the right combination of building systems can make a significant difference.
